The initiative opens a new chapter in environmental diplomacy by bringing together governments, development banks, international institutions and private investors to support and finance countries that conserve and restore their tropical forests, while promoting the sustainable use of natural resources.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"padding-left: 80px; text-align: left;\" data-start=\"636\" data-end=\"1147\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>&#8220;Tropical forests play an essential role in tackling climate change. They store carbon, maintain water flows and safeguard biodiversity. Without them, we have no water to drink or to grow crops. When forest destruction reaches irreversible levels, the consequences are felt across the world. Forests are worth more standing than cut down and they should be included in the GDP of our countries. The ecosystem services that forests provide to humanity must be valued \u2014 as must the people who protect them.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px; text-align: left;\" data-start=\"636\" data-end=\"1147\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em>President Lula<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>\ud83c\udf10 What is the TFFF<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The TFFF is a permanent international fund that allocates resources to nations with tropical forests such as Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Indonesia, Congo, Ghana, among other tropical countries.<\/p>\n<p>Its proposal is simple and innovative: <strong>those who conserve, receive<\/strong>. Countries are rewarded based on verified results, confirmed through satellite imagery showing reductions or stability in deforestation rates.<\/p>\n<p>The goal is to transform forest conservation into a stable and lasting financial flow, recognising that forests provide essential global services \u2014 climate regulation, the water cycle and biodiversity \u2014 which benefit all countries.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>\ud83d\udcb0 How the fund operates<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The TFFF will adopt a <strong>result-based payment model:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Countries that reduce deforestation below pre-established targets will be financially rewarded.<\/li>\n<li>Targets and results will be monitored using satellite imagery and assessed annually.<\/li>\n<li>Reforestation and regeneration efforts will also be taken into account.<\/li>\n<li>Funds will go directly to national governments, enabling sovereign programmes (that is, managed by the countries themselves) for the long term, focused on <strong>bioeconomy, reforestation and the protection of local communities.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>\ud83d\udca1 Why the TFFF is innovative<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">The TFFF represents an innovation in climate policies that, until now, relied largely on donations.<br \/>\nThe fund creates an investment model with both financial and environmental returns, built on three key pillars:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><strong>A common global metric:<\/strong> based on satellite monitoring and deforestation indicators.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><strong>Clear economic incentives:<\/strong> the more forest preserved, the greater the return.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><strong>Climate justice:<\/strong> compensation directed to countries and peoples that protect nature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">\u201cThis is the COP of implementation.<br \/>\nThe TFFF turns promises into concrete action.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><em><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Marina Silva &#8211; Minister of the Environment and Climate Change<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>\ud83e\udde9 Who participates<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">The TFFF brings together a broad network of participants:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><strong>Governments:<\/strong> tropical forest countries and investor nations.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><strong>International financial institutions:<\/strong> which structure and manage the fund.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><strong>Private companies:<\/strong> that invest resources and take part in sustainable projects.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><strong>Multilateral organisations:<\/strong> such as the UN and UNDP, which contribute to governance and result verification.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><strong>Indigenous peoples and local communities:<\/strong> direct beneficiaries and guardians of the forests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe title=\"Fundo Florestas Tropicais para Sempre - TFFF\" width=\"1220\" height=\"686\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SVGiwkSk8ws?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">\ud83c\udf33 Forest-based people at the heart of it all<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">The TFFF stipulates that at least 20% of the resources from each participating country must be directed to Indigenous peoples and traditional communities, who are, in practice, the main guardians of the forests<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">\u201cCaring for rubber tappers, extractivists, women and Indigenous peoples is caring for the forests\u201d, said Lula. The Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sonia Guajajara, also emphasised that local communities played an active role in designing the TFFF model.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>\ud83c\udfdb\ufe0f Governance and transparency<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">The fund also innovates in its governance structure. Several others \u2014 including Germany, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and the European Union \u2014 have expressed interest in joining.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">The expectation is that the fund will mobilise large-scale public and private resources and become a lasting instrument of South\u2013South and North\u2013South cooperation, recognising the economic and climate value of tropical forests.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>\u201cFor the first time in history,<br \/>\ncountries of the Global South will lead a forest agenda.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em>President Lula<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>\ud83c\udf31 What will be financed<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">TFFF investments will prioritise sustainable activities that combine income generation with environmental conservation, focusing on measurable results in the preservation and recovery of tropical forests.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">Funds may support national programmes and policies aimed at sustainable forest use, the promotion of the bioeconomy and the strengthening of local communities, according to criteria and goals established by the fund itself.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>\ud83c\udf0e A legacy born in the Amazon<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><strong>In brief, <\/strong>tropical forests are essential to the balance of the planet. They regulate the global climate, sustain the water cycle that supports agriculture, store carbon and shelter millions of species and traditional communities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">When a country preserves its forests, the whole of humanity benefits. The Tropical Forests Forever Facility is based on the principle of shared responsibility: those who protect the climate deserve to be rewarded.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">The launch in Bel\u00e9m symbolises the Global South\u2019s leadership in this new forest agenda. On X, President Lula summed up the symbolism of the TFFF\u2019s birth in Bel\u00e9m, \u201csurrounded by suma\u00famas, a\u00e7a\u00ed palms, andiroba trees and jacarandas\u201d:<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"padding-left: 80px; text-align: left;\" data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">&#8220;In a few years, we will see the fruits of this fund and take pride in remembering that it was in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest that we took this step together.
