The event is co-organized by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.br\/cade\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CADE<\/a> (Brazil\u2019s Administrative Council for Economic Defense), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/brics-competition-law-and-policy-centre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/direitorio.fgv.br\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FGV Direito Rio<\/a> (CTS-FGV).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">The debates will cover<strong> major cases and investigations<\/strong> from each country. The meeting will be strategic for competition authorities to share recent developments in antitrust enforcement and jointly address regulatory challenges specific to digital markets.<\/p>\n<p the lens of global processes. Traditionally, antitrust analysis of grain markets focuses on horizontal competition. However, to understand the dynamics in BRICS countries, we are conducting a vertical competition analysis that examines relationships among producers, traders, infrastructure operators and financial intermediaries, from farm to port and all the way to the consumer.\u201d <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\" data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><em><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Professor Alexey Ivanov &#8211; Director of BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">Researchers pay special attention to the activities of global grain traders, assessing how economic and technological shifts reshape value chains.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Global ABCD+ oligopoly and competition risks<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">According to the authors, the <strong>global grain market<\/strong> has long been dominated by an oligopoly of major agricultural traders known as ABCD+ (ADM, Bunge, Cargill, Louis Dreyfus Company + COFCO, Olam and others). This concentration makes the sector vulnerable to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">Sharp price fluctuations<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">Speculative behavior<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">Negative impacts on producers and consumers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Brazilian case: soybean moratorium and its impacts<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">The study gains additional relevance after a <strong>landmark decision by CADE.<\/strong> In August, the Brazilian authority suspended the soybean moratorium \u2014 a private agreement created two decades ago to protect the Amazon Forest \u2014 and opened an investigation into major exporters over possible violations of the Brazilian competition law.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"649\">&#8220;The soybean moratorium case is a striking example of<strong> how competition law is being tested in new and unconventional areas<\/strong>. The report shows how financialization and digitalization are reshaping global value chains, creating competition concerns that go beyond traditional market definitions.
