On November 27, the winner of the BRICS Literature Prize will be announced in Khabarovsk, Russia. The international event aims to recognize the talent of contemporary writers from member countries, featuring 10 authors among the finalists:
- Brazil: Ana Maria Gonçalves
- Russia: Alexey Varlamov
- India: Sonu Saini
- China: Ma Boyong
- South Africa: Nthabiseng JahRose Jafta
- United Arab Emirates: Reem Al Kamali
- Ethiopia: Abere Adamu

- Indonesia: Denny JA
- Egipt: Salwa Bakr
Brazil in the competition
Brazil’s participation in the BRICS Literature Prize celebrates national talent and strengthens ties among the nations, marking a historic step in amplifying the country’s voice on the international stage.
Regarding the Brazilian finalist, writer Ana Maria Gonçalves is the author of the novel “Um defeito de cor” (A Color Defect), winner of the prestigious Casa de las Américas Prize and selected as the best Brazilian literary work of the 21st century according to a poll conducted by Folha newspaper. She is also the first Black woman to hold a seat at the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL).
Marcos Freitas, president of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (Academia de Letras do Brasil – ALB) and co-chair of the BRICS Literature Network in Brazil, highlighted the importance of the initiative for Brazilian authors:
“The creation of the BRICS Literature Prize is an extraordinary milestone for our writers and readers. (…) Ana Maria Gonçalves, now among the finalists, is without a doubt one of the finest writers of our time.”

Cultural exchange
According to Marcos Freitas, the event also offers an opportunity for Brazilian readers and writers to discover high-quality literary works from other BRICS countries, supported by a strong commitment to excellence in translation.
The ALB president explained that the BRICS Literature Prize expands access to literary richness and linguistic diversity among member nations, helping connect authors through the BRICS Literature Network:
“These are countries with extensive literary and cultural traditions associated with enormous ethnic and linguistic diversity. The network offers Brazilian writers a unique platform for international cultural exchange.”

Multipolar culture
The co-chair of the BRICS Literature Network in Russia, Vadim Teryokhin, underscored the influence of multipolar culture among nations: “The BRICS Prize offers contemporary writers from different countries the opportunity to discover each other’s work, understand their own place in the global literary process, learn from their peers and adapt this experience in their own countries,” he said.
“The prize promotes cultural cooperation, mutual literary influence, the strengthening of fraternal ties, mutual understanding and people’s diplomacy.”

About the selection
The jury is composed of literary specialists from each participating country, with nominees suggested by jury members or their representatives. The selection process takes place in three stages: semifinalists were announced in Brasília (Brazil) during the 2nd BRICS Forum in September; finalists were revealed in Jakarta (Indonesia); and the winner will be announced in Khabarovsk (Russia) at the end of the month.
